World trade is not fair, and does not produce fair outcomes for those producers and consumers involved in it. A small number of rich corporations exploit a multitude of producers for the highest profit. Often, this leaves the producer and the land ravaged and with little hope of survival. Fair trade offers a fair price for these producers, an ability to sustainably use the land, and secure enough from the land to be able to earn what we would consider a modest living.

Fair trade is all about exercising our power as consumers to make a choice, together through our choice of Fairtrade, we have the ability to take on Corporations with budgets bigger than some countries and positively effect thousands of people worldwide!

A university with its high consumption of cocoa, chocolate and coffee is a perfect place to start the ball rolling towards more fair trade sales in New Zealand. At OUSA we encourage you to join behind us as we campaign to get up to speed with the rest of the
world and make Otago University the first Fair Trade University in New Zealand.

What is a Fairtrade University?

A University can be awarded Fairtrade Status by the Fairtrade Foundation if it fulfills the 5 Fairtrade goals:

  1. Has a Fairtrade University Steering Group.
  2. Has a written Fairtrade Policy.
  3. Sells Fairtrade products in all outlets.
  4. Uses Fairtrade products at internal meetings and events.
  5. Campaigns for increased consumption of Fairtrade products on campus.
